Process Steps for International Doctors

Registration / Licensure

All doctors wanting to practice in the UK are required to be registered and licensed with the General Medical Council (GMC)

Full GMC registration and licensure enables doctors to work in any form of professional medical practice in the UK. Doctors must, however, also hold specialist registration to take up a consultant post (other than a locum consultant post) in the NHS.

You will need to provide documentary evidence of your medical education and experience to support your application for GMC registration and licensure. To complete the process, you will need to visit the GMC office in person to undergo an identity check. A photograph will be taken of you and this will be made available to your employer to confirm your identity.

IELTS

Non European Economic Area applicants applying for registration must satisfy the GMC that they have the necessary knowledge of English. You will be required to prove that you’ve taken the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieved an overall score of 7, with minimum scores of 7 in speaking, listening, reading and writing. IELTS scores are valid for two years.

PLAB

The GMC uses the PLAB test to ensure that international doctors have the basic medical competence and communication skills to practice in the United Kingdom. Doctors wishing to take the PLAB test must have successfully completed the IELTS. The first part of the PLAB can be taken in various countries throughout the world but the second part must be taken in the United Kingdom.

Acceptable Postgraduate Qualifications

Doctors may be exempt from PLAB requirements if they’ve completed certain postgraduate qualifications in the UK or Overseas that GMC accepts as providing sufficient evidence of a doctor’s knowledge and skill, for the purpose of a full registration with a license to practice medicine.

Job Offer

RN India is working with numerous NHS Trusts and Private Hospitals to arrange face to face, telephone and webcam interviews for doctors. Our Clients prefer to interview doctors that have completed GMC Registration and Licensure formalities. (Completed IELTS & PLAB requirements or are exempt from PLAB requirements because of their postgraduate qualifications)

Certain employers are willing to interview doctors that haven’t completed GMC Registration and Licensure formalities as long as the doctor makes a commitment to clear necessary requirements within a stipulated time frame. Generally, the doctor is given 3-6 months to clear the Registration and Licensure formalities.

We encourage doctors interested in living and working in the UK to clear their IELTS & PLAB requirements or complete their acceptable postgraduate qualifications as soon as possible to increase their chances of selection. Healthcare facilities are more inclined to offer jobs to candidates that can arrive and start working within a few months.

Over the past few quarters, we’ve worked with hundreds of doctors interested in living and working in the United Kingdom and have placed many at leading Trusts throughout the UK. Our UK Clients give us detailed job descriptions / person specifications for the Posts they’re looking to fill. Hence, we’ve developed a good understanding of the current requirements in the UK and the skill sets most highly in demand.

We will help you to make your profile more attractive to Employers recruiting doctors from abroad.

Immigration

If you’re not a British Citizen or a national of a Country in the European Economic Area (EEA) you will need a visa before you can travel to the UK. A visa is a certificate that is put into your passport that gives you permission to enter the United Kingdom.

Points Based System

The points based system for assessing immigration applications for the UK was launched on 29, February 2008. It changes the way applicants from outside the EU and European Economic Area can work, train or study in the UK. The system has reduced over 80 different routes to employment and education in the UK to just 5 tiers.

Tier 1: highly skilled individuals to contribute to growth and productivity (previously the Highly Skilled Migrant Program).

Tier 2: skilled workers with a job offer to fill gaps in the UK labor force (previously the work permit route).

Tier 3: low skilled workers needed to fill specific temporary labor shortages. This tier is suspended indefinitely.

Tier 4: students wanting to come to the UK to study

Tier 5: youth mobility and temporary

You need to gain points to qualify for each specific tier before you can apply for permission to enter the UK. The number of points required and the way the points are awarded depend on the tier you are applying under, but will also reflect your qualifications, experience, age, previous earnings, and English language competence. Most International Doctors enter the UK under Tier 2.

Certificate of Sponsorship

Any Non-UK/ EEA national seeking entry into the UK for the purpose of employment will normally require a Certificate of Sponsorship. Certificates of Sponsorship are applied for by the employer from the UK Border Agency and will only be granted if the employer can show they have been unable to fill the post with an individual from the UK/EEA resident labor market.

Shortage Occupations List

Some occupations are recognized by the UK Border Agency as shortage occupations. If a job is on the shortage occupations list, it means that there are not enough suitably qualified and skilled workers from the resident labor market to fill the position. An employer can therefore offer a post to a non-EEA applicant without having to prove that they cannot fill the vacancy from the UK / EEA labor market.
